A full day trip to Smithsonian Tropical Research Institution's research site on Barro Colorado Island, in the canal. STRI's boat takes you to the island, where you get a tour of the site (STRI's research, and Panama's biodiversity) with a guide, followed by lunch. Hiking trails are also available. The boat trip is also an interesting trip along the canal. The tour is in English. Depart from the Holiday Inn (City of Knowledge) at 6 am; return by 4 pm.

Casco Viejo

A half-day walking tour of Panama City’s UNESCO-listed Casco Viejo and Panama la Vieja guided by an eminent Panama Historian and Architect. Casco Viejo, also known as Casco Antiguo, is the historic district of Panama City. Completed and settled in 1673, it was built following the near-total destruction of the original Panamá city, Panamá la Vieja in 1671. It was designated a World Heritage Site in 1997.Depart from the Holiday Inn (City of Knowledge) at 7am. Return to the Holiday Inn by noon.
Panama la Vieja

A half-day walking tour of Panama la Vieja guided by an eminent Panama Historian and Architect. Panama la Vieja is the remaining part of the old Panama City and former capital of the country. It is located in the suburbs of the modern city. Together with the historical district of Panamá, it forms a World Heritage Site. Depart from the Holiday Inn (City of Knowledge) at 7am. Return to the Holiday Inn by noon.
Gamboa Rainforest Resort
THIS IS NOT a field trip offered by the conference, but we have negotiated special rates for people interested in excursions offered by the Gamboa Rainforest Resort, which is near the conference venue. Gamboa Rainforest Resort is a hotel and resoprt complex that offers a wide varity of activities, including hiking, canoe, forest tours, and more. It is an excellent choice for families.
